FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Every lighting project is different — and so are the questions that come with it. We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common enquiries about our process, timelines, and design services.

Working with a lighting designer
Just as you’d engage an architect to design your space and an interior designer to shape its style, a lighting designer ensures the lighting complements both.
We’re the link between architects, interior designers, electricians, and clients — creating a lighting plan that enhances atmosphere, function, and architectural intent. We take the stress out of building and renovating.
Our design service includes plan review, tailored concepts, fixture recommendations, and full lighting specification. Depending on the project, we can also provide optional 3D renders to help you visualise the final outcome before installation.
Absolutely. Collaboration is a core part of our process, and we work seamlessly with your project team to ensure the design integrates perfectly.
We can partner with ATL Electrical for certified installation and automation setup. If you already have an electrician, we’re happy to collaborate with them too.
Our design process
Every project begins with a conversation. We take the time to understand your space, how it’s used, and the atmosphere you want to create.
Our designers craft tailored lighting concepts that balance creativity, function, and form — aligning seamlessly with your architecture and lifestyle.
When the project scope calls for it, we can provide custom 3D renders at the quote stage — allowing you to visualise your lighting design before installation.
We work closely with architects, builders, and contractors to refine the details and ensure each fitting is perfectly integrated into the build.
Choose to work with your preferred electrical trades, or partner with ATL Electrical for certified installation and smart automation integration — ensuring your design is executed exactly as envisioned.
Lighting design
As a general guideline:
Over kitchen islands: ~1800mm from the floor
Over dining tables: ~1700mm from the floor
Walkways or open areas: above 2m for clearance
These are guidelines — your design, ceiling height, and fixture style play a big role. We tailor recommendations to each project.
Not necessarily. Odd numbers are visually pleasing, but modern design often uses:
two oversized pendants
a single sculptural piece
linear fixtures
custom clusters
We help you choose the best layout for scale, balance, and style.
Yes — clustering can create a beautiful focal point. Odd numbers typically read better, but the final arrangement depends on style, scale, and the space. We design clusters with balance and intent.
This depends on the room size, surface finishes, mood desired, and functional needs. We calculate the correct lighting levels, layer options, and fixture combinations to avoid dark spots or over-lighting.
Bathrooms require fittings with the correct IP rating, depending on their proximity to water sources. We specify compliant options that meet NZ standards while still complementing your design aesthetic.
Generally, no. Exterior lighting must be IP-rated for water and dust protection. We specify the correct exterior fittings based on exposure, placement, and architectural intent.
Technical lighting knowledge
An IP rating indicates a light’s resistance to water and dust. For example, IP44 is splash-proof and suitable for bathrooms and protected outdoor areas. Higher ratings protect against direct water contact.
Quality LEDs can last up to 25,000 hours or more. Instead of failing suddenly, they gradually reduce in brightness over time. If a product we specify fails prematurely, we support you with replacement options.
Lumens: How bright the light is
CRI: How accurately colours appear under the light (we aim for CRI 90+)
Kelvins: The colour temperature (warm to cool)
We consider all three when crafting your lighting plan so the space looks and feels right.
We specify LED lighting for energy efficiency, longevity, and consistent colour rendering. For decorative fixtures, we’ll recommend bulb wattage, shape, and colour temperature that suit the fixture and atmosphere.
Project scope and suitability
Yes — we design lighting for new builds, renovations, commercial spaces, exterior areas, and large venues.
Yes. Exterior lighting is a significant part of our work — pathways, garden accents, façade lighting, and outdoor entertaining spaces. See more of what we can do on our services page.
Often yes. We can design solutions using multi-outlet ceiling plates, hooks, or creative cable routes to achieve the layout you want without invasive electrical work.
We’ll work with ATL Electrical or your electrician to determine safe solutions. Some fittings require earthing; others may use double-insulated options depending on the fixture and space.
